Cher's Balustrade

Initially imported from Italy by William Randolph Hearst, this hand carved Carrara Marble balustrade was never included in his Castle. At some point, unused items like these were auctioned off and Cher bought the beautiful pieces for her new house, which she build right on the coastline in Malibu, overlooking the Pacific.

During construction it became evident that these handrail sections needed to be custom fit to the balcony dimensions. Cutting them to size however destroyed the flow of the moldings and ornamentation. Marcel Mächler was and still is one of the very few trained craftsmen in the area, capable of skillfully connecting all the intricate detail to make the antique look as if it just perfectly fit the building.
